What is a wood fired or wood burning sauna?

A wood-fired sauna is a common type of sauna that uses a wood-burning stove to heat the sauna room. Instead of relying on electricity it burns wood to create the heat for sauna environment. Wood-fired saunas provide a traditional and authentic sauna experience. They have been used for centuries in various cultures around the world.

Common types of wood fired saunas

  • Traditional: This is the classic Finnish or Swedish design where the sauna room itself is heated by a wood-burning stove or heater. The stove is usually placed inside the sauna room, and the heat generated from the burning wood heats up the stones on the stove. Water can be poured over the hot sauna stones to create steam.
  • Smoke: Smoke saunas are an ancient type of wood-fired sauna. The fire is located in a separate firebox outside the sauna room. The smoke from the fire enters the sauna, infusing it with a smoky aroma. After the sauna reaches the desired temperature, the smoke is let out, and the room is ready for use.
  • Changing room: Some wood-burning saunas are designed with an attached changing or relaxation room. An example of this is the Harvia Keitele. This separate room is used to change, rest, or cool down before and after your sauna.
  • Mobile: Built on trailers or a wheeled base, mobile wood burning saunas allow them to be easily transported to different locations. They’re popular for events, festivals, and gatherings where people can experience a sauna in various settings. An example would be a horsebox sauna.
  • Barrel: With a barrel-like design, barrel saunas are often compact, space-efficient and located an outdoor space such as the garden. The circular shape promotes efficient air circulation and even heating.
  • Banya: Originating from Russia, a banya is a traditional wood-fired sauna that typically has a higher humidity level than other saunas. It involves using bundles of birch branches to lightly “beat” the body. Doing so is believed to improve circulation and relaxation.

Why choose a wood burning sauna kit?

Because it’s more than just a heated room; it’s a portal to the traditions of ancient cultures, a connection to the earth’s rhythm, and a voyage into self-discovery. Feel the therapeutic heat penetrate your skin, melting away stress and tension, as if the very essence of the forest is embracing you.

As you inhale the pure, invigorating scent of the wood, your senses awaken, grounding you in the present moment. Your mind clears, your body rejuvenates, and your soul finds solace in the simplicity of this age-old ritual.
